We are learning a different way to solve multiplication. The students are taught 3 different ways to solve multiplication problems. Then they can decide which works best for them. Our math series emphasizes a deeper understanding of place value and using different strategies to solve problems. Here are a couple of videos to show the lattice method. Most 3rd graders are relieved when they learn this concept and really like using it. Again, after we have learned the different ways to solve, they can chose what makes sense for them.
